Exploring Calgary’s Bridgeland District
Calgary may be known for its skyline, but its soul lives in neighbourhoods like Bridgeland—where history, culture, and some of the city’s most exciting food are all packed into a few walkable blocks.
Located just north of downtown, Bridgeland dates back to the 1880s and was once known as “Germantown” for the immigrants who first settled there. By the early 20th century, Italian and Ukrainian communities had shaped the area’s identity, followed by a brief chapter as Calgary’s red-light district before the opening of the Calgary General Hospital in 1910 brought a more “respectable” reputation.
Like many inner-city neighbourhoods, Bridgeland experienced a lull in the mid-20th century. But after the hospital was imploded in 1998—opening up 30 acres for redevelopment—the neighbourhood began its steady revival. Today, nearly 30 years later, Bridgeland is once again thriving: a vibrant, diverse community filled with independent businesses, creative energy, and some of Calgary’s best dining.
Here’s how we like to explore it.
Start with a Sip: Bridgeland Distillery
Begin your Bridgeland wander at Bridgeland Distillery, where a chance meeting in the Okanagan brought co-founders Jacques Tremblay and Daniel Plenzak together. Their shared passion for distilling—and a not-so-subtle nod to “Jack Daniels” in the combination of their names—led to a focus on brandy, whisky, and eau de vie that reflects their French and Italian heritage.
Their commitment to local sourcing is just as strong, partnering with Alberta farms for grains and corn. The result? Award-winning spirits, including a gold-medal brandy and Alberta Distillery of the Year honours.
Pop into the tasting room for a cocktail and charcuterie, or book a weekend tour to see the magic up close.
Just Down the Street: JINBAR
A short stroll brings you to JINBAR, where “Jin” means “true”—and that philosophy carries through everything they do.
Founder Jinhee Lee drew inspiration from childhood memories of her father bringing home fried chicken and ice cream on payday. That sense of comfort and joy is at the heart of the menu, which blends Korean flavours with crowd-pleasing favourites like pizza and fried chicken.
Now led by Chef Hyungjae Lim, the kitchen continues to push that idea further, thoughtfully pairing food and drink so they speak to each other. The space itself is minimal and inviting, letting the food—and the open kitchen—do the talking.
Something Sweet: Canela
When you’re ready for something sweet, Canela is a must.
This mother-daughter venture is rooted in a passion for plant-based baking that’s as thoughtful as it is delicious. Their goal is to showcase the benefits of veganism—for both people and the planet—without sacrificing flavour.
The cinnamon rolls are the star (and for good reason), but weekend brunch is equally worth planning your visit around.
A Taste of Italy: Noto Gelato
A few steps away, Noto Gelato delivers a true taste of Italy in the heart of Calgary.
Founded by Chef Dom Tudda and his niece Stefanna Spoletini, this cozy shop has quickly set the standard for gelato in the city. Now run by Stefanna and her husband Scott Robinson, it’s known for both classic technique and standout flavours.
Don’t leave without trying the pistachio—it’s one of the best in Calgary.
A Local Classic: UNA Pizza + Wine
UNA Pizza + Wine has been a Calgary favourite since 2010, known for its thin-crust pizzas, Mediterranean-inspired dishes, and relaxed, neighbourhood feel.
It’s the kind of place you come for one pizza and end up lingering over wine and conversation. Even better, their “Community Love” initiative donates $1 from every feature pizza to local organizations—so your meal gives back, too.
A Scoop (or Two): Village Ice Cream
No Bridgeland stroll is complete without a stop at Village Ice Cream.
Founder Billy Friley built Village around a simple idea: small-batch, super-premium ice cream made on-site, served in spaces that feel like true community hubs. The flavours lean nostalgic with a creative twist—and yes, the salted caramel is as good as everyone says.
Coffee Done Right: Phil & Sebastian
For coffee lovers, Phil & Sebastian is essential.
What sets them apart isn’t just quality—it’s their deep involvement at every stage, from investing in coffee farms to roasting beans in small batches at their East Village HQ. Their precision and care show up in every cup.
If you’re hungry, pair your pour-over with a Hoopla Donut and settle in for a moment.
A Nod to History: La Brezza
Bridgeland’s Italian roots are still alive at La Brezza.
Warm, welcoming, and deeply rooted in tradition, the restaurant showcases recipes inspired by the owner’s Italian nonna. It’s a place where food and heritage meet—and where dishes like the calamari keep locals coming back time and again.
