One of our favourite weekends of the year – Alberta Open Farm Days – is almost here and for the Ultimate Alberta Road Trip we’ve rounded up some of our favourite Open Farm Days stops from south to north.
On August 15 & 16, Alberta Open Farm Days invites you to explore farms, ranches, orchards, and food producers across the province. It’s a chance to meet the people behind your food, discover local products, and experience Alberta’s agriculture firsthand.
We’ve chosen events that are open to the public on both Saturday and Sunday. Are you ready? Let’s hit the road starting south of Calgary in Nanton.
Nanton
Step inside Alberta’s agricultural history at the Canadian Grain Elevator Discovery Centre, where you can tour restored historic grain elevators and watch heritage engines in action.
Foothills County near Longview
Hartell Homestead is offering free hourly farm tours where you can meet Highland cattle (you know, the cute ones with the bangs) and other farm animals, learn about sustainable farming, and shop for locally raised meats and fresh produce.
Diamond Valley
At Eau Claire Distillery, Alberta’s first craft distillery, there will be free hourly tours and tastings of their award-winning farm-to-glass spirits.
Millarville
Discover the unique world of Spirit Hills Winery with flower wine tastings, family-friendly tours, and stunning foothills views.
While you’re in Millarville, don’t miss the Priddis & Millarville Fair, featuring livestock shows, local artisans, antique tractors, family activities, and the Millarville Farmers’ Market all weekend long. It’s always fun to see who wins the prizes at this famous fair.
Calgary
Bridgeland Distillery is offering complimentary behind-the-scenes tours, tastings of three handcrafted spirits, and 10% off bottles, merchandise, and cocktails during Open Farm Days.
(East of Calgary) Strathmore and Wheatland County
Origin Malting & Brewing in Strathmore is offering free malt and brewery tours, local craft beer samples, and a market featuring local makers and Alberta producers.
Field Stone Fruit Wines is offering winery and orchard tours, wine tastings, U-pick berries, and 2-for-1 wine flights during Happy Hour.
(North of Calgary) Carstairs
Tour Shirley’s Greenhouse to see how fresh vegetables are grown without synthetic pesticides, then shop for farm-fresh produce.
Also in Carstairs, visit ALCLA Native Plants for a guided nursery tour, browse over 200 species of Alberta native plants, and shop pesticide-free plants and seeds.
Lacombe County
Explore Billyco Junction Gardens with a self-guided walk through their U-pick fruit, vegetable, and flower gardens.
(West of Edmonton) Wildwood
Visit Wild Country Gardens for a guided farm tour, shop Alberta-made products in their farm store, and enjoy a farm-to-table lunch.
(North East of Edmonton) Smoky Lake
Experience Métis Crossing with cultural demonstrations, buffalo teachings, plant walks, and explore the historic village, trails, farmyard, and Métis exhibits.
Vermilion
Tour Old School Cheesery with their head cheesemaker, enjoy a cheese tasting, and browse a delicious selection of handcrafted Alberta cheeses and gourmet local products.
